PM Boris Johnson announces sanctions on Russia
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced at the Commons that the UK will impose sanctions against five Russian banks and three Russian billionaires after Russia ordered troops into eastern Ukraine.
The prime minister says the actions of Russia amounted to a “renewed invasion” of Ukraine – parts of which were illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.
The PM says the sanctions are the “first barrage” of sanctions that will be extended if the situation escalates.
Three Russian billionaires will also be sanctioned – their UK assets frozen and they will be prevented from travelling to the UK.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops into two rebel-held regions on Monday – after he recognised the breakaway regions as independent states.
