Biden wins Michigan primary despite Gaza protest vote
Despite facing significant protest over his stance on the war in Gaza, President Joe Biden is expected to comfortably win Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary. Activists had urged Democrats to vote “uncommitted,” resulting in tens of thousands doing so, exceeding many expectations. However, the latest CBS News projection indicates that Biden secured 80% of the overall vote. He expressed gratitude to “every Michigander who made their voice heard today.”
The United States, as an ally of Israel, provides significant military aid to the country. Earlier in the month, the US vetoed a UN resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, instead proposing its own draft urging a temporary ceasefire. It sparked anger, including within Biden’s own party, with many advocating for a stronger stance against Israel’s military actions.
In his statement, Biden focused on the achievements of his administration in the state and criticised his rival, Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Trump is projected to win Tuesday’s Republican primary in Michigan, describing it as a “great day” and expressing confidence in a significant victory.
