Labour officials will decide on Diane Abbott’s future, says shadow minister The Guardian says Diane Abbott’s local party and Labour officials will decide whether she can stand again at the next election, a shadow minister has said, after Abbott lost the Labour whip for her comments about racism. Abbott made comments suggesting that Jewish, Irish and Traveller people were not subject to racism “all their lives”. John Mann, the former Labour MP who is now a peer and advises the government on antisemitism, suggested it might be best if Abbott, an MP since 1987, did not stand again for her…
Diane Abbott suspended by Labour after suggesting Jewish people do not face racism The Independent says The Labour whip has been suspended from Diane Abbott pending an investigation into a letter the MP wrote suggesting Jewish people are not subjected to the same racism as some other minorities. Ms Abbott, the former shadow home secretary under Jeremy Corbyn, apologised over the comments and said the letter published in The Observer had been an “initial draft” sent by mistake. It stated that Jewish, Irish and traveller communities have experienced “prejudice”, but added: “This is similar to racism and the two words…
It’s time to forgive Diane Abbott The Spectator says Diane Abbott is a giant figure in the modern Labour party. As the first black woman ever to be elected to the House of Commons, and the longest serving black MP, she is an inspiration to black and brown communities – especially women – across the country. Abbott also wrote a crass and offensive letter to the Observer, in which she unfortunately, and utterly unsuccessfully, sought to distinguish racism from prejudice – in the process deeply offending the Jewish, Irish, and Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) communities. For a life-long campaigner…
Diane Abbott has Labour whip suspended after ‘hateful antisemitic’ remarks Sky News says Labour MP Diane Abbott has had the whip suspended following remarks in which she suggested Jewish people do not face racism, but instead suffer prejudice similar to “redheads”. Ms Abbott wrote a letter to The Observer newspaper, in response to an article which had the headline: “Racism in Britain is not black and white. It’s far more complicated.” The Hackney North MP said she was responding to writer Tomiwa Owolade’s claims that “Irish, Jewish and Traveller people all suffer from ‘racism'”. “They undoubtedly experience prejudice,” Ms Abbott…

UK help for Britons stuck in Sudan ‘severely limited’ Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has warned that UK aid for Britons stranded in Sudan will remain “severely limited” until a ceasefire is reached. Following a “complex and rapid” evacuation operation, British diplomats and their families have been evacuated from the country, but some British nationals still stranded in the country have said they feel abandoned by the UK government. Violence between two opposing forces in Sudan has resulted in deadly shootings and shelling in Khartoum. Mr Cleverly stated that there were “specific threats and violence directed towards diplomats” that forced the…
Millions of Britons miss out on cheap broadband, due to lack of awareness on offers Over half of low-income households in the UK are unaware of low-cost broadband deals available to them, according to a report by communications regulator Ofcom. The watchdog expressed concern that households are not receiving sufficient advice about the possibility of switching to social tariffs, which cost between £10 and £20 per month and are offered to customers on benefits. Ofcom estimates that millions of families could save around £200 annually by switching. While uptake of these deals has quadrupled since January 2021, the majority of…
