Australia recalls mushroom gummies after hospitalisations

Australia has issued a recall for two mushroom gummies products following reports of severe health issues, including “disturbing hallucinations” and “persistent vomiting,” which have led to hospitalisations nationwide.

The recall focuses on Uncle Frog’s Mushroom Gummies, specifically warning against consuming the Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane varieties. Authorities have noted unexpected toxicity in consumers experiencing symptoms such as seizure-like activity, anxiety, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, and rapid heart rates.

In a concerning incident earlier this month, a teenager in South Australia was found in an unresponsive state after consuming several gummies. Prompt medical intervention led to his recovery, but the incident has underscored the serious risks associated with these products.

    Vic CHO alert:
"Health warning on hospitalisations linked to ‘Uncle Frog’s Mushroom Gummies’ in Victoria"

Definitely did not have this one on my 2024 bingo card.

Several hospitalisations have also been reported in New South Wales, prompting ongoing investigations into the exact ingredients or contaminants responsible for the adverse effects. Dr Darren Roberts, Medical Director of the NSW Poisons Information Centre, emphasised the need for caution, advising the public against consuming the implicated gummies.

Uncle Frog’s, described as a Byron Bay-based business promoting wellness through specially formulated gummies, has temporarily shut down its website in response to the health concerns. Authorities continue to urge consumers to avoid these products until further investigations are complete and additional safety measures can be implemented.
