Andy Murray is adamant he can win his third Wimbledon title despite equalling his worst-ever run following his exit at the Madrid Open.

The British tennis legend suffered a humiliating first-round defeat to Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori at the Spanish clay-court event on Thursday.

Murray’s loss to the world No.164 means he has now failed to win four ATP Tour matches in a row, equalling the worst run of his professional career.

The 35-year-old, who plays with a metal hip after career-saving surgery, was beaten by Jack Draper, Dusan Lajovic and Alex de Minaur at Indian Wells, the Miami Open and the Monte-Carlo Masters respectively before losing in Madrid.

But Murray, a three-time major champion who won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, still thinks he can challenge for titles at his home Grand Slam.

He has also confirmed that he will play this year’s French Open – which gets started at the end of May – despite his struggles on clay so far.

‘I would like to play [Roland-Garros] because I don’t know if I’ll get another opportunity,’ Murray said following his defeat to Vavassori.

‘I also have ambitions of competing for Wimbledon titles and that sort of stuff.

‘I know sitting here today that probably doesn’t sound realistic but I do believe that’s a possibility.

‘It’s impossible to say what the right thing to do is but obviously it’s a Grand Slam [the French Open]. I would like the opportunity to play.’

Murray is currently ranked world No.52 and reached an ATP Tour final in February at the Qatar Open.

He rolled back the years in Doha and was playing some of his best tennis, including a remarkable semi-final victory in which he saved five match points.

Prior to that he reached the third round of the Australian Open in January, winning a five-hour-and-45-minute marathon against Thanasi Kokkinakis.
