    US News Roundup – 01/04/2025

    • The US – and the world – eagerly awaits Wednesday’s latest US tariffs which the US president says will impact the world
    • Trump has also said he might consider a third term despite the law only allowing two presidential terms
    • Right-wing groups are advocating for laws to limit library books focusing on LGBTQ+ and racial issues
    • House is considering the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration

New US tariffs – ‘Liberation Day’ & Trump considers third term

Democratic Senator Cory Booker delivered a marathon speech today, criticizing the “recklessness” of President Donald Trump’s policies, particularly proposed cuts to Medicaid.

In legislative developments, right-wing groups are advocating for laws to limit library books focusing on LGBTQ+ and racial issues, a move opponents view as censorship. Additionally, the House is considering the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration.

President Donald Trump has recently suggested the possibility of seeking a third term in office, despite the clear prohibition outlined in the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which limits presidents to two terms. In a recent interview, Trump stated he was “not joking” about exploring “methods” to remain in power beyond his current term.

Trump plans to introduce new tariffs on Wednesday, dubbed “Liberation Day,” aiming to reduce reliance on foreign goods. Economic analyses predict that these tariffs could lead to higher prices and lower incomes for American families.

Details remain unclear, but Trump promises significant investments from CEOs to avoid import taxes.

The announcement of these tariffs has already impacted financial markets. Auto stock prices for Asian and European manufacturers have declined, reflecting investor concerns about the potential for decreased sales and increased costs. Additionally, the stock market has experienced significant volatility, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite recording their worst quarters since 2022.

The Trump administration has effectively emptied the California-Mexico border of migrants through multiple executive orders aimed at curbing illegal immigration, including suspending the asylum system and bolstering troop presence at the border.

    U.S. Sports Roundup

In the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs have been awarded marketing and commercialization rights for the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Spain as part of the NFL’s Global Markets Program. This expansion increases the Chiefs’ international presence to seven countries, including existing rights in Mexico, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

In college basketball, Paige Bueckers has led the University of Connecticut (UConn) to the Final Four, scoring 31 points and six assists in their 78-64 win over USC in the Spokane 4 Regional final. This marks her third consecutive 30+ point game, making her the first UConn player to total over 100 points in three games.

In the NHL, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Kevin Lankinen made history by becoming the first goaltender in NHL history to win 10 consecutive road games to begin a season. Additionally, Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour recorded his 300th win in his 488th game coached, becoming the fastest coach in NHL history to reach 300 wins.
