U.S President Donald Trump has paused some tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods – it comes after the U.S imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian, Mexican and Chinese goods.

Trump delays some Canada and Mexico tariffs until next month

President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause on some of the tariffs placed on Mexican and Canadian imports, delaying them until next month.

The exemption applies to goods covered under the USMCA trade agreement, which was negotiated during Trump’s first term. This comes after the U.S. imposed sweeping 25% tariffs on its North American neighbors earlier this week, following an initial one-month delay.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described a recent call with Trump as “colourful” and admitted that Canada will likely remain in a trade war “for the foreseeable future.” Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took a swipe at Trudeau, calling him a “numbskull” and warning that his stance could result in even higher tariffs.

Trump has defended the tariffs as a way to protect American jobs and manufacturing while also cracking down on illegal migration and drug trafficking.
