Jamie Carragher fires warning to Liverpool owners after Nottingham Forest draw

Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool bosses that they must buy a defender this month if they are to stay on course to win the Premier League title.

The Reds drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Tuesday night, falling behind to a Chris Wood goal before substitute Diogo Jota won them a point.

Arne Slot’s side did have a lot of chances to win the game, with Forest’s defenders and goalkeeper Matz Sels in inspired form to keep the score at 1-1.

It is not disastrous by any stretch, with Liverpool still six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but Carragher feels that there is cause for concern.

The club legend believes the impressive defence that Liverpool boasted earlier in the season is now fragile and action must be taken.

He does not see the answer within Slot’s squad and has implored the Liverpool hierarchy to bring in a defender during the transfer window.

‘Liverpool should’ve won tonight, but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win,’ Carragher posted on X.

‘But the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season has gone. Always look likely to concede. Buy a defender!!!!’

Slot had his first choice back four in his starting XI at Forest, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in central defence, flanked by Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson at full-back.

Both Robertson and Konate were replaced on 66 minutes, which immediately led to the equaliser as their replacements linked up.

Kostas Tsimikas swung in a corner and Diogo Jota headed it home to level things up.

While Carragher did not make clear which position in defence he would like to see strengthened, he has spoken on the matter before and would like to see an upgrade at left-back.

The former England defender thinks Robertson is now past his best and Tsimikas is not a good enough replacement.

‘Liverpool need to sign a full-back,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports after the 2-2 draw with Manchester United earlier this month.

‘I think they need a left-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold was really poor. He will be a lot better than that and Conor Bradley is fantastic.

‘I just think Andy Robertson, who is an absolute legend, is just hanging on in every game. I don’t think Kostas Tsimikas is quite of the standard to come in and replace him.

‘I think if Liverpool could get a left-back in January, I think that’d put Liverpool in a really strong position to win the league.’
