US Government Shutdown Nears as Trump-Backed Funding Bill Fails in House
The U.S. government is on the brink of a shutdown as lawmakers race to secure a last-minute funding deal.
On Thursday, a Republican-led spending plan aimed at averting the crisis failed in the House of Representatives, falling short of the required two-thirds majority. The bill saw opposition from 38 Republicans and most Democrats.
The proposal, backed by former President Donald Trump, came after Trump derailed an earlier bipartisan funding deal negotiated by House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democrats. Trump’s stance followed criticism of the original agreement by tech billionaire Elon Musk.
The rejected bill sought to tie short-term government funding to a two-year suspension of the federal debt ceiling, a move Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, dismissed as “laughable.”
With the deadline looming, Speaker Johnson faces intense pressure to present a viable solution before the government runs out of money.
