Trump v Biden in the first 2024 presidential debate: Biden stumbles amid growing concern over his age
Joe Biden’s debate performance on Thursday night heightened concerns about his age and fitness for office. Despite low expectations, Biden’s performance was notably lacklustre. He appeared flat, rambled through answers, and struggled with clarity. His campaign attributed his raspy voice to a cold, but this explanation seemed insufficient. Throughout the debate, Biden often seemed on the defensive, and his responses, especially early on, were at times nonsensical. In one such incident, he confusingly stated, “We finally beat Medicare,” a remark that puzzled many.
Biden’s former communications director, Kate Bedingfield, bluntly acknowledged the president’s poor performance, emphasising that Biden failed to demonstrate energy and stamina. As the debate progressed, Biden attempted to regain momentum by aggressively challenging his opponent, sometimes successfully provoking angry retorts from Trump. However, this strategy did not compensate for the challenges posed by initial debate topics like the economy and immigration, where Trump holds a polling advantage.
In contrast, Trump delivered a more focused and disciplined performance. He avoided the disruptive behaviour that marred his 2020 debate and skillfully redirected the conversation to criticise Biden’s record. While Trump made several unfounded claims, Biden struggled to effectively counter them. On the contentious issue of abortion, Trump misrepresented Democratic positions, and Biden’s counterattacks failed to resonate.

Despite a somewhat stronger finish, Biden’s overall performance raised doubts about his debate abilities and left Democrats uneasy about his prospects. The Biden campaign aimed for an early debate to shift focus to Trump, hoping to remind voters of the chaos of his presidency. However, Biden’s weak showing has sparked concerns about his ability to face Trump again in future debates.
