Trump campaign gets $50m boost from single donor
Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has received a significant boost with a $50 million donation from conservative billionaire Timothy Mellon, as disclosed in a federal filing on Thursday. Mellon’s contribution was part of the $68 million raised by the Super-PAC “MAGA Inc” last month.
Mellon, heir to the Mellon banking family, made his donation a day after Trump was convicted on 34 charges of falsifying business records related to his New York hush-money trial. Mellon has also been a major donor to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., contributing at least $20 million to the pro-Kennedy Super-PAC American Values.
Super-PACs, which can raise unlimited funds to support election candidates, have enabled Trump’s allies to outspend those of President Joe Biden in recent weeks. Mellon, who resides in Wyoming and is known for his investments in transport-related companies, is a rarely photographed amateur pilot. The Mellon family’s net worth is estimated at $14.1 billion by Forbes.
In contrast, billionaire Mike Bloomberg has donated nearly $20 million to Biden-supporting Super-PACs, including $19 million to the pro-Biden group Future Forward (FF PAC) and $900,000 to the Biden Victory Fund, which combines the efforts of the Biden campaign and Democratic Party committees. The Biden campaign has yet to comment on these contributions.
Additionally, the pro-Kennedy Super-PAC reported raising only $280,000 last month, none of which came from Mellon.
