Oscars 2024: Oppenheimer sweeps awards with best picture and actor wins
One half of the summer blockbuster due – Barbenheimer– won big at last night’s Oscars.
Oppenheimer was the biggest winner of the 96th Oscars, scoping seven awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Irish star Cillian Murphy.
Robert Downey Jr won Best Supporting Actor, whilst the film’s director Christopher Nolan won the Best Director award.
The film also won film editing, cinematography and original score.
Elsewhere, Emma Stone won Best Actress for her role in Poor Things – which also won best production design, make-up and costume design.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Holdovers.
Barbie won for Best Original Song, written by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas. The film was last year’s highest-grossing film and formed part of a cultural phenomenon with Oppenheimer- both movies were released on the same day and saw moviegoers watching both films back-to-back.
It was a historic night for some, as Ukraine won its first-ever Oscar with Best Documentary – 20 Days in Mariupol. The UK won Best International Film for The Zone of Interest.
It was a good night for British talent, with Chris Nolan and the Poor Things team picking up plenty of awards.
