A huge rift developed between Amit Sharma (Anil Goutam), Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) and Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) in Emmerdale when the couple found out that Amit had attacked Nicky Milligan (Lewis Cope) in what seemed to be a homophobic hate crime.
Laurel and Jai are proud parents of a gay son, Arthur Thomas (Alfie Clarke). They also strongly championed Arthur’s friend Marshall Hamston (Max Fletcher) when he was being subjected to homophobic treatment by his father, Colin Hamston (Mark Noble).
At one point Laurel was taken hostage by an increasingly disturbed Colin, who blamed her for Marshall not wanting to see him. During the ordeal, Laurel was gagged and tied to a bed in disturbing scenes.
So Laurel and Jai are not people to brush aside someone’s homophobia, even if that person is a family member. Upon learning about Amit’s attitude to Nicky they were horrified and didn’t want him anywhere near their family.

What viewers know, of course, is that Amit had a different reason for attacking Nicky. He’d discovered that Nicky knew the terrible secret that he’d been present when his brother Rishi Sharma (Bhasker Patel) died – which he confessed to Suni Sharma (Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana), who then confided in Nicky.
In upcoming episodes, Amit realises that Laurel and Jai are never going to let him be part of their family and he starts making plans to go back to India. Hoping that he’ll change his mind Suni once again tries to convince Laurel to give Amit another chance.

Laurel decides to find out from Nicky what really happened when Amit punched him and she seeks Nicky out to question him.
What she doesn’t realise is that Amit is watching their conversation, deeply worried that Nicky will tell Laurel the truth.
