Britons to leave Gaza in stages, says UK Foreign Office
Brits will leave Gaza “in stages over the coming days,” the UK Foreign Office has said.
The Rafah border crossing with Egypt is being opened for “controlled and time-limited periods” and to allow the seriously wounded to leave.
The first group of foreign nationals were permitted to cross on Wednesday. Injured Palestinians were also allowed to cross into the border, where a field hospital has been set up for the injured Palestinians.
It’s believed that there are roughly 200 British nationals in Gaza.
Civilians in Gaza have been trapped in the area since 7 October following Hama’s attacks on Israel. More than 1,400 people were killed and at least 239 were taken hostage during the initial attacks.
Israel has responded with airstrikes and now a ground invasion. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 8,700 people have been killed since Israel’s retaliatory bombing began.
Israel controls the air space over Gaza and its shoreline and has strictly controlled the movement of people and goods.
