Mum says son was killed by Peloton bike that fell on him and sliced neck artery

A man in New York City was killed after a Peloton exercise bike severed his artery, a lawsuit against the company claims.

Ryan Furtado, 32, was found dead in his Downtown Brooklyn apartment in January 2022 after completing a workout on his exercise bike.

His mother, Johanna Furtado, is now suing the exercise bike company, claiming that the company failed to properly warn users about unsafe practices.

According to the suit, Furtado purchased the bike in July 2021. Five months later, he was killed during a ‘core’ workout.

‘The workout requires riders to disembark the bike to conduct exercises on the floor,’ the lawsuit reads. ‘When rising from these exercises, Ryan used the bike assist him in getting up.’

It was then that the bike ‘spun around and impacted him on his neck and face, severing his carotid artery in his neck and killing him instantly.’

Furtado was found by NYPD officers with the bike still sitting on his face, the suit claims.

According to the plaintiff, the bike was ‘defective and unreasonably dangerous’ due to insufficient warnings.

They also claim that Peloton trainers demonstrated stretches using the bike for support, which applies pressure to the appliance causing it to ‘destabilize and fall.’

In a response letter filed in June, Peloton claimed that Furtado’s death was due to his ‘own negligence, intentional act and/or fault.’

Furtado’s mother is seeking damages for her pain and suffering, as well as funds to cover her son’s medical and funeral expenses.

Furtado’s death is not the first attributed to a Peloton machine. In March 2021, a three-year-old child was killed after suffering a severe brain injury on a Peloton treadmill.

Peloton has since discontinued the model that caused the injury, the Peloton Tread Plus.

Earlier this year, Peloton recalled over 2.2million bikes due to an issue with their seats, which the company said could cause a ‘potential fall and injury risk.’
