Trump charged with bid to overturn 2020 election
Donald Trump has been charged with plotting to overturn the result of the 2020 election – where the former president lost the election to Joe Biden.
In his latest indictment, he is accused of four counts of conspiracy to defraud the US, tampering with a witness and conspiracy against the rights of citizens. The indictment comes after an inquiry into the events surrounding the January 6 2021 US capitol riot.
Trump, who is running for president in 2024, denies wrongdoing. He took to social media to call the case against him “ridiculous.”
Trump has already been charged in two other cases: mishandling classified documents and falsifying business records to cover up a hush-money payment to a porn star.
The latest investigation focused on the behaviour of Trump in the two-month period between losing the election to Joe Biden and the January riot, where his supporters stormed Congress.
The man leading the inquiry, special counsel Jack Smith, said: “The attack on our nation’s capital on January 6, 2021, was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy.
“As described in the indictment it was fuelled by lies.”
