Prince William ‘wants to scrap divisive royal tradition’ from his coronation

Britain’s next coronation may look a lot different – and more modern – from King Charles’ at Westminster Abbey.

It is understood Prince William is planning to remove the historic ‘Homage of the People’ after anti-monarchy group Republic labelled it ‘offensive, tone deaf and a gesture that holds the people in contempt’.

The divisive element of the ceremony was toned down after a last-minute change reportedly approved by His Majesty himself.

After the negative reaction the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, received after calling on the nation to swear their allegiance to the monarch, the oath was changed to instead ‘invite’ those who wish to express support for him to do so.

But a source close to the Prince of Wales told The Times he is looking to ‘evolve’ the next coronation even further.

‘There is no way he will go down that route or anything like it,’ they stressed, only a week after the coronation.

The heir to the throne is said to have been carefully ‘reflecting’ on the events with his closest friends and advisers.

A royal source added: ‘He is really thinking, how do we make his coronation feel most relevant in the future?

‘He is mindful of the fact that in 20 years’ time, or whenever his time comes, how can the coronation be modern but also unifying to the nation and the Commonwealth?

‘I think his coronation will look and feel quite different.’

It is understood that, contrary to some reports, William was not closely consulted on the planning for his father’s coronation.

Before the change, the order of service was expected to read: ‘All who so desire, in the Abbey, and elsewhere, say together:

“All: I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.”
