Nicolas Cage is well known for his method acting, but he took things to a whole new level in his role as Dracula in the upcoming film Renfield.

The Hollywood icon, 59, previously described his acting style as ‘nouveau shamanism’, and is famed for his kooky roles and eccentric on-set behaviour.

But the Face/Off star fully embodied his version of Dracula in more ways than one when preparing for the role of the famed vampire in Renfield.

In a new interview, Cage said while trying to perfect the ‘eloquent and elegant’ voice of his character, he discovered an unusual way to master the accent.

‘I was trying to give the character an eloquent and elegant voice that was pretty hard to do with all the ceramic material in my mouth,’ he told The Sun newspaper.

‘But I got used to it by taking them home, leaving them in when I was in my hotel room.’

Cage, who has starred in more than 100 films, went on to speak about his inspirations for the role, sure as Sir Christopher Lee who previously portrayed Bram Stoker’s iconic character.

‘You have this character with long fingers and nails, a creepy bald head, and rodent-like face, moving in very strange ways. It terrified me,’ he said.

He went on to speak about the ‘super-talented people’ that helped design the look of his character.

‘We wanted it to be more homage, more Christopher Lee. I favoured Christopher Lee as Dracula and I liked his kind of sixties hairdo, but the wardrobe, the costume, and no, I didn’t come up with the idea for the rings.

‘That all came out of a wardrobe. They came in with all that. Maybe they sense something in me that I would like that, but that was really their contribution.’

Alongside Cage in the blood-sucking role, Renfield will also see Nicholas Hoult as the film’s titular character, as well as Awkwafina as Rebecca Quincy.

In the film, Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased, but he has finally reached his limit after centuries of servitude.

Desperate to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness, Renfield starts to figure out how to end his codependency.

Renfield is set to release in cinemas on April 14, 2023.
