A Sphynx cat that was rescued after getting tattooed by a gang incarcerated in Mexico has found a new home in the US.
The hairless cat was found at the Cereso No 3 state prison in Juarez, where it was being mistreated by criminals. The Mexicles gang had tattooed Hecho en Mexico, which means Made in Mexico, on both of its sides.
Officers found the cat after looking through prison cells following a New Year’s Day prison break in which 10 guards and seven inmates died.
The cat was put up for adoption. Hundreds of people around the world expressed interest, KTLA 5 reported.
A special committee in Juarez narrowed down the applicants to 10, which were seven from the US, two from Juarez and one from Oaxaca.
The committee then unanimously voted to send the cat to a new country, to the US.
The new owner’s identity will not be revealed for the person’s safety.
