Fast food giants Burger King is going to ditch plastic lids from soft drinks in a bid to be more eco-friendly.

It is part of Burger King’s ongoing commitment to reach zero per cent single-use plastic by 2025, and builds on the removal of all plastic toys from meals in 2019.

Burger King has said the move will remove a whopping 17 million plastic lids from circulation and save over 30,000 kg of plastic every single year.

The company said: ‘Spilling a drink is annoying, it’s not the end of the world… but single-use plastic could be.’

Lids will be available on request and there will still be lids on all hot drinks, takeaway and delivery orders.

All soft drinks, including milkshakes and frozen drinks will now be served without a lid.

In 2018 rivals McDonald’s also ditched the plastic straw in favour of a paper one.

It was the latest company to opt out of some single-use plastic products which can take hundreds of years to decompose if not recycled.

The restaurant chain uses 1.8 million straws a day in the UK.

Burger King has also pledged to increase sustainability, encouraging customers to switch from traditional hamburgers and try its plant-based options.

Katie Evans from Burger King UK said: ‘We’re excited to be introducing this permanent removal of plastic lids in restaurant, ultimately reducing single-use plastics.

‘Our Meltdown campaign in 2019, removing plastic toys from King Jr Meals, was the first significant step on our journey and this next step will take us closer to reaching our target of removing all single-use plastic by 2025.’
