Julia Bradbury has expressed how much it meant to be at the National Television Awards raising awareness about breast cancer, saying that she feels ‘very grateful’ to do so one year after she was diagnosed.

During last night’s award ceremony, the TV presenter was nominated in the authored documentary category for her ITV film Julia Bradbury: Breast Cancer and Me, losing out to Kate Garraway’s documentary Caring For Derek.

In September last year, Julia announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would be undergoing a mastectomy, saying at the time: ‘As it is I am going to lose my breast. I trust that one day I will look down on it and think that was the fight of my life and I have the ultimate battle scar to prove it.’

While speaking to Metro.co.uk on the red carpet at the NTAs at Wembley Arena, the 52-year-old said it was ‘incredible’ to be there and to be recognised for her documentary about her diagnosis and treatment.

‘It’s incredible. To build awareness like this about breast cancer, to be nominated in such a strong category, is a real honour and it’s wonderful to be here one year after my breast cancer diagnosis. I’m just very, very grateful,’ she said.

The former Countryfile presenter looked radiant on the red carpet in a princess-esque gown, complete with a pink ruffled skirt and sparkling top.

Ahead of the event, she shared a post on Instagram showing her hugging her three children, who she shares with her husband Gerard Cunningham.

‘It’s that time of year again. @officialntas here we come. This time last year I had been diagnosed with #breastcancer & was heading to the event knowing my mastectomy was coming in a few weeks. Not being able to say anything made it a strange, emotional evening,’ she wrote in the caption.

‘Tonight I kissed my babies goodbye, and I off to Wembley we go. My Mama and Big Sis are with me tonight and we’re proud that Julia Bradbury: Breast Cancer & Me has been shortlisted. Thank you everyone who voted, it’s raised so much awareness.’

After it was announced that Kate had won the accolade, Julia shared another post congratulating her and praising the Good Morning Britain presenter for being there with her daughter Darcey.

‘Thanks to everyone who voted & huge congrats to @kategarraway for winning this incredible category. Very touching that Kate came with her daughter.. proud to be here with my Mama and Big Sis. There will be dancing,’ she wrote.

‘Love to all the @officialntas nominees…such powerful important stories to tell. Try and watch all the docs if you can.’

The other documentaries nominated alongside Kate and Julia’s programmes were Paddy and Christine McGuinness: Our Family and Autism, Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next and Tom Parker: Inside My Head.

The National Television Awards are available to watch on ITV Hub.
