Sunday Papers – ‘Frost quits’ – ‘PM considers lockdown’
Most of the front pages report on Lord Frost’s resignation as Brexit minister. He quit over his discontent about new Covid measures and the political direction of the government. The papers report heavily on the number of Covid infections, the potential lockdown and fears over the NHS.

Scientists have urged the government to bring in restrictions now amid fears deaths could surge to 6,000 a day, according to The Observer. The paper goes on to suggest that “political paralysis” is undermining UK attempt to “fight this new wave”.
Sunday Mirror – ‘The peak mid-winter’
COVID hospitalisations could hit 3,000 a day in January as top scientists warn Boris Johnson delays could be deadly, the Sunday Mirror reports. The paper goes on to report that Omicron is the “worst wave yet”. It says that Covid hospital admissions could hit 3,000 a day in January, but a record day for booster jabs on Saturday “gives hope”.
The paper pictures Rose and Giovanni, winners of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing competition. Rose Ayling-Ellis has become the first deaf contestant to win.
Sunday Express – ‘Held hostage by the virus’
An emergency Cobra meeting will be held amid fears the Omicron variant will force record numbers to isolate, the Sunday Express reports.
Another 90,418 daily cases were reported across the UK on Saturday – following days of record highs. However, the paper says that “many backbenchers” have warned that “a vote on another clampdown will spark a massive Commons rebellion”.
The Sunday Times – ‘Crisis deepens for PM as key Brexit ally quits’
The Sunday Times reports how the crisis engulfing Boris Johnson’s leadership has deepened with the departure of key Brexit ally, Lord Frost.
Allies of Frost say “he is exasperated with the high-spending regime, the obsession with hitting “net zero” environmental targets and Covid vaccine passports”.
Sunday People – ‘Covid rips into NHS heroes’
“Covid rips into NHS heroes”, the Sunday People warns. Up to 50,000 doctors, nurses and NHS staff could be out of action on Christmas Day due to the surge in Omicron cases, according to the paper.
The Sunday Telegraph – ‘Frost quits cabinet as PM considers lockdown’
The Sunday Telegraph leads on Brexit minister Lord Frost resigning from the cabinet – leaving Downing Street in chaos. The headline reads “Frost quits Cabinet as Johnson considers Christmas lockdown”.
The paper also pictures police in a clash with anti-vaccine protesters outside the entrance to Downing Street.
Daily Star Sunday – ‘Strictly come dancing £1 million rose’
Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis, the show’s first deaf contestant, is set to rake in £1million in TV and film deals, according to Daily Star Sunday.
