People expected to wear masks in enclosed spaces after July 19
Nadhim Zahawi has said the government will issue guidance telling the public they are expected to “wear masks in indoor, enclosed places” after July 19 – the final step of easing restrictions.
The vaccines minister told Sky News he is “confident” that Boris Johnson will announce on Monday that Covid-19 restrictions will be lifted on 19 July as planned despite the surge in cases.
But said the PM will inform the public to continue wearing the coverings in certain places despite the fact the legal requirement will end on 19 July.
The PM, earlier in the week, said from the 19 July there will be no more legal requirement to wear face masks in shops on public transport – but Mr Zahawi’s comments on Sunday suggest more caution over the lifting of the face mask rules.
On Wednesday, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told MPs he is £very relaxed” about airlines, trains, and bus operators imposing their own rules around face masks beyond the lockdown lifting date.
Shadow education secretary Kate Green told Sky News the changing positions from government ministers is a “recipe for confusion” and said it could lead to “more confrontations”.
