Sajid Javid: Update due on England’s 19 July lockdown end date
Health Secretary Sajid Javid will be updating MPs later today on England’s 19 July lockdown end date.
Javid is expected to address the commons less than 48 hours after he was appointed to the role following the resignation of Matt Hancock.
- Javid will update MPs on lockdown end date
- PM expected to rule out early unlocking
- Cases rising but deaths and hospitalisations still low
The early review is to see if the lockdown lifting can happen two weeks ahead of the scheduled date.
An early unlocking is very unlikely, but ministers in England are confident that 19 July will mark the end of social distancing rules.
Whilst Covid-19 cases in England may be rising rapidly, the data will focus on hospital cases and deaths.
When the delay was announced, cases had started to rapidly rise and government scientists feared it could translate to a high number of hospitalisations and could overwhelm the NHS.
But data from the past few weeks have provided confidence that is not going to be the case – whilst hospital cases and deaths are rising, they are still much lower levels than before.
