Italy drought emergency as rivers dry up – Lake Como drops 16cm as 43C wave batters Europe
Daily Express says AN URGENT drought emergency has been issued in Italy as Lake Como’s levels drop by 16cm in 72 hours.
“Alarming” numbers have been recorded by the Lombard hydrometric stations in regards to lakes and rivers of the plains in mountainous parts of Italy. That’s according to Gianluca Lattanzi, the president of the Italian Society of Environmental Geology, Lombardy section. A tributary of Lake Como which joins Bellano has seen a continuous decline, dropping 23cm across three days. Levels have reduced so badly in some places that the dry riverbed is now exposed. This has now sparked immediate action to draw up an emergency drought plan.
