A businesswoman who drove home drunk after a wine binge was so intoxicated she crashed her car into the same lamp-post TWICE during a bungled attempt to flee a hit-and-run.

Mother of three Kelly Ryan, 44, had ploughed into the back of a parked car as she careered home in her Audi 5 following a night out with friends in Manchester city centre.

But when she reversed back to make a quick getaway, Ryan inadvertently drove into the lamppost then hit it again for a second time as she made a further attempt to speed off.

She eventually gave up her attempts to drive away after straddling the car on the pavement and fled the scene on foot. The amount of damage caused during her mini-demolition derby is not known.

The mum-of-three says she was ‘mortified’ by her actions when she sobered up the next day (Picture: Cavendish Press)

Ryan, from Fallowfield, Manchester was arrested shortly afterwards having been spotted by a passer-by who was found to be more than three times the alcohol limit.

She was later said to be ‘mortified’ after sobering up and having to break the news of her unruly behaviour to her children aged 16, 13 and 11.

At Manchester magistrates court Ryan was banned from driving for three years after she admitted driving with excess alcohol and failing to stop after a road smash. It emerged she had a previous drink driving conviction from 2012.

Rebecca Pearson, prosecuting said: ‘At around 11.30pm on the 24th October last year, the defendant was driving down Albert Road, in Levenshulme, Manchester.

‘A member of the public who lived nearby to the road noticed a loud noise coming from the road, when they looked out of their window they could see that the defendant had crashed her black Audi A5 into the back of a stationary Toyota Yaris that was parked on the road.

‘She reversed back from the Yaris and drove straight into a nearby lamp post, hitting it head on. Whilst trying to drive away she drove into the lamp post again.

‘She then drove down the road and stopped on a pavement, where she got out and left the car at the scene.

Ms Ryan was ordered to wear an electronic tag fo 90 days and undergo 50 hours of unpaid work (Picture: Kelly Ryan/ Cavendish Press)

‘Whilst this was happening, the member of the public called the police and they eventually found the defendant later that evening not far from the scene.’

Ryan who according to Companies House was the director of an animal welfare business failed a roadside breath test with a subsequent reading showing 118 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

She represented herself and ‘I am mortified at what happened – especially when she had to explain it to my kids. I have no defence for it, I can’t justify what I did in any way.’

District Judge Jane Hamilton subjected Ryan to 90 days on an electronic tag as part of alcohol abstinence requirement. She was also ordered to pay £199 costs and complete eight rehabilitation activity days plus 50 hours of unpaid work.

The judge told Ryan: ‘I appreciate you do not have a problem with drink but it is the binging element that causes a serious problem in this case.’
