Gareth Southgate is leading England through the qualifying stage of Euro 2024 as the Three Lions look to win their first major trophy since 1966.

Southgate has gone close to adding a second title to the trophy cabinet, however, reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020.

But which clubs did the 52 year-old feature for when he was a player – and which teams did he manager before landing the England job?

Here is everything you need to know as Southgate’s reign as England manager rolls on.

Which clubs did Gareth Southgate play for?

Southgate began his career at Crystal Palace in 1988, where he initially started as a right back before transitioning into central midfield.

Having risen through the academy ranks, Southgate became the captain at Selhurst Park and led the team to Premier League promotion in 1993.

However, after Palace were relegated from the Premier League two seasons later, Southgate moved to Aston Villa for £2.5m where he would make over 190 appearances at centre back across four seasons.

Southgate’s spell at Villa Park saw him lift the League Cup in 1996, but his time in the Midlands came to an end when joined Middlesbrough for £6.5m in 2001, where he stayed before retiring from the game in 2006.

Which teams did he manage before England?

After retiring from playing, Southgate immediately extended his stay in Middlesbrough by becoming the club’s manager in 2006.

However, Southgate’s tenure included relegation to the Championship in 2009, and he was dismissed just two months into the club’s campaign in the second tier.

He became the England U21 manager in 2013 and was promoted to the senior team on a temporary basis when Sam Allardyce was sacked after just one game in charge in 2016.

How many times did he play for England?

Southgate made his debut for England as a substitute against Portugal in 1995, which was the first of 57 caps he won for his country.

He played every minute of England’s Euro 1996 campaign on home soil, but Southgate’s tournament ended in tears when he missed his penalty in the semi-final against Germany which sent the Three Lions crashing out.

Southgate also featured for England at the 1998 World Cup and at Euro 2000.

He called time on his international career in 2004, having scored two goals across his nine year spell in the side.
