The BBC’s gripping drama thriller The Tourist is back after two years – but how did season one end?

At the beginning of the show we were introduced to Jamie Dornan’s character Elliot, who wakes up in the Australian outback with no memory.

A truck ran him off the road but Eliot doesn’t remember anything about what happened, who he is, or why he was there – and as he tries to riddle these big questions, he realises wherever he goes, people are trying to kill him.

In hospital with severe amnesia he meets police officer Helen Chambers played by Danielle Macdonald, who is in an unhappy relationship with controlling Ethan Krum (Greg Larsen).

Elliot eventually learns his name with the help of Luci – who he later finds out is actually his ex-girlfriend, and also the fiancée of a druglord who also happens to be his boss. Yikes.

It turns out Elliot is the former accountant of the international criminal Kostas, and so – naturally – he and Luci legged it with $1million of stolen money.

In his efforts to piece everything together and avoid being killed by Kostas’ dogs searching for the money, he ends up taking Helen hostage – but they end up forging a close bond.

Kostas is shot and killed by a dodgy cop called Lachlan, and in the process Luci dies too.

Lachlan blames the murder on Elliot and Helen, but they manage to clear their names and he is arrested.

Of course, Helen ends her controlling relationship.

Meanwhile, Elliot tracks down what he thought would be the final missing piece of the puzzle – Lena Pascal, a mysterious woman he keeps having visions about.

She revealed to Elliot that he previously trafficked her and other women via whom he smuggled bags of heroin into Australia – in their stomachs.

Lena also informed Elliot he had killed two women when the bags exploded in their stomachs.

Elliot then tries to kill himself but wakes up in hospital again, by which time Helen has learnt about his ugly past and she swiftly turns her back on him.

Consumed with guilt, no hope and no Helen, Elliot prepares to kill himself once again by drinking a bottle of vodka, and swallowing a handful of pills.

As he waits to die, he receives a message from Helen which simply has an emoji of a burrito.

This, she previously told him, would mean everything was going to be okay.

    Cliffhanger alert…

All 6 episodes of The Tourist season 2 are available to watch now on BBC iPlayer, and the first episode will air on BBC One at 9pm on January 1.
