The Ministry of Culture today signed the expropriation decree of Villa Verdi and its appurtenances, Giuseppe Verdi’s final home in Villanova sull’Arda, in the Sant’Agata area. The provision establishes the definitive acquisition by the State of the master’s final resting place. “Villa Verdi is the symbol of Italy‘s cultural greatness and the place where the maestro found inspiration for many of his immortal compositions. Thanks to this important act, the State guarantees its protection and returns it to the community as everyone’s heritage” , declared the minister Alessandro Giuli.
Villa Verdi has been closed for two years, so the Maestro’s home risks deterioration
Villa Verdi has been closed for two years due to a legal dispute between the heirs and the State. The compensation proposed to the heirs is eight million euros. The purchase, states the Mic, represents a fundamental step for the protection, conservation and valorization of one of the symbolic places of Italian culture and musical history: “Villa Verdi, with its real estate heritage, the historical park and the extraordinary collection of furnishings, letters, works of art and personal objects of the maestro Giuseppe Verdi, constitutes a unicum of exceptional artistic, historical and cultural value” and the intervention of the ministry “was necessary to guarantee the conservation and public enjoyment of this good, the whose importance goes beyond national borders”.

The acquisition of Villa Verdi will now allow urgent restoration and maintenance interventions to be started, safeguarding the complex and allowing its wider valorisation. Thanks to the work of the offices of the General Directorate of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and of the Superintendence for the provinces of Parma and Piacenza, which followed the administrative and technical process, it was possible to plan the entry into possession of the property set for on 28 February 2025 with the aim of making Villa Verdi a reference center for nineteenth-century Italian culture, music and history.

“I believe that the acquisition of Villa Verdi, the final outcome of a long procedural process, is a fundamental step to guarantee the conservation of the complex and its full valorization through the creation of a Verdi itinerary that includes the different ‘places’ of the master, the Giuseppe Verdi Theater and the Palazzo Orlandi in Busseto, the birthplace in Roncole”, underlined the head of the Department for the protection of cultural heritage and general manager of the Mic Luigi La Rocca. The provision was sent to the control bodies and will become executive once registered.

The complex of Villanova sull’Arda, surrounded by six hectares of parkland, was intended by the composer as a residence to return to after his many commitments around Europe. Of the estate, enlarged and rearranged in 1849, only a part was visible until it was closed: the room of Giuseppina Strepponi (Verdi’s second wife), with the original furnishings, Verdi’s bedroom-study, and two other rooms with documents, photographs and copies of Verdi’s works.
