US, UK Covid-19 vaccines show signs of immunity in patients

Arab News says two of the world’s most promising studies to develop a vaccine for Covid-19 have said subjects in their trials have shown early signs of immunity.

Two of the world’s most promising studies to develop a vaccine for Covid-19 have said subjects in their trials have shown early signs of immunity.

The trials, run by teams at Oxford University in the UK and pharmaceutical company Moderna in the US, have both received significant government funding in their bids to develop their vaccines before the end of the year.

Jobless figures ‘not showing full extent of crisis’

BBC News says the way the UK reports unemployment may not reflect the “true scale of joblessness,” says a think tank.

Unemployment rose by 34,000 in April to reach 1.3 million, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

But the Resolution Foundation argues that the 23% drop in average hours worked between early March and late April is a better indicator of unemployment.

‘I think you can trust me’: Fauci stands firm as Trump works to undermine me

The Guardian says Anthony Fauci, has pushed back at a concerted campaign by Donald Trump and his allies to discredit his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials and advisers have publicly sought to undermine Fauci in at least five separate instances over the past four days, even as the coronavirus surges across the US, with the death toll now above 135,000.

“I believe for the most part you can trust respected medical authorities,” Fauci told a virtual forum on Tuesday, responding to a question that referenced the White House providing reporters with a list of what it described as his past mistakes.

Nations scale back re-opening plans as Covid-19 numbers back on the upswing

France24 says coronavirus infections were surging across the globe on Wednesday, forcing several countries to put the brakes on reopening or impose new restrictions on their weary populations.

The number of COVID-19 cases worldwide topped 13.4 million and more than 581,000 deaths have been reported since the virus emerged late last year in China.

With the situation predicted to worsen in the United States, Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, said it would require customers to wear masks at all its stores to help stop the virus spreading.

Japanese students in the US breathe a sigh of relief after visa curbs dropped

Japan Times says Japanese nationals studying in the US were put at ease on Wednesday after US immigration agency recanted a directive that would have forced thousands of international students out of the country or transfer to different institutions if their schools only offered courses online this fall.

The stunning turnaround was announced at the beginning of a court session Tuesday in Boston, in which Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology sued the federal government over the decree, AP reported. More than 200 universities rallied around the two institutions by signing court briefs.

Cleaners who removed Covid-19 artwork on the tube ‘did not know it was by Banksy’

Sky News says cleaners who removed a piece of graffiti artwork from a London Underground train carriage did not know it was by Banksy when they scrubbed it off, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

TfL said it only became aware it was the work of Banksy after he released a video showing how it was painted, by which time it had already been removed.

Arsenal end Liverpool hopes of points record

BBC Sport says Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said his side “have to learn” after the champions’ hopes of setting a new Premier League points record ended as they suffered only their third defeat of a stellar campaign at Arsenal.
