US election 2024: Swingstate Arizona
Arizona played a pivotal role in the 2020 election, helping the Democrats secure the presidency by narrowly flipping in their favour for the first time since the 1990s.
As a border state with hundreds of miles along the U.S.-Mexico line, Arizona has become central to the nation’s immigration debate. While border crossings have decreased from record highs, immigration remains a top concern for voters.
What Donald Trump has said
Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised Kamala Harris’s handling of immigration, as she was tasked by President Joe Biden with addressing the border crisis. Trump has also pledged to carry out “the largest deportation operation” in U.S. history if re-elected.
Another hot-button issue in Arizona is abortion access. The state has been at the centre of a fierce debate after Republican efforts to reinstate a near-total abortion ban from 1864 failed. The issue has become even more divisive since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, ending the constitutional right to abortion.
