TL:DR – US Department of Justice releases 3 million pages of Jeffrey Epstein files

    • The US Department of Justice released 3 million pages of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, sparking speculation about his contacts.
    • Images and AI-generated content featuring public figures alongside Epstein have emerged, leading to widespread misinformation.
    • Mamdani’s name appears five times in the Epstein files, related to newspaper clippings rather than wrongdoing.
    • Nigel Farage denied meeting Epstein, despite an AI-generated image circulating on social media.
    • The Ukrainian Centre for Countering Disinformation reported Russian bots targeting Emmanuel Macron with false claims linked to Epstein.

From Mamdani to Farage: AI-generated images spread after Epstein file release

The US Department of Justice has released an additional 3 million pages of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, igniting significant speculation around his extensive network of affluent contacts. The newly disclosed documents, which include images, videos, text messages, and emails, have also led to an influx of disinformation, including AI-generated images falsely connecting public figures to Epstein.

The release of these documents holds immediate importance due to the resurgence of conspiracy theories and misleading imagery spreading across social media. As misinformation proliferates, the situation underscores the challenges posed by technology in verifying the authenticity of digital content.

AI Images Spread Misinformation Involving Zohran Mamdani

Among the misleading content is a manipulated image depicting Zohran Mamdani, New York’s mayor, as a child alongside Epstein and other notable figures. This image was flagged by Euronews’ fact-checking team, The Cube, which found a SynthID watermark indicating it was AI-generated. Mamdani’s name appears five times in Epstein’s files but is linked only to newspaper clippings, with no evidence of any wrongdoing or correspondence with Epstein.

Mamdani commented on the distress caused by such images, stating, “at a personal level, it is incredibly difficult to see images that you know to be fake, that are patently photoshopped and AI-generated, and yet can reach across the entirety of the world in an era of misinformation.”

    Claims of Epstein-Farage Connection Debunked

An additional misleading image depicting British politician Nigel Farage alongside Epstein circulated widely before being removed by the Wrexham Labour Party group. Farage denied ever meeting Epstein or visiting the financier’s private island, Little Saint James, asserting that he “never met Epstein and never went to the island.” The image’s authenticity remains uncertain, as indicators suggest it may also have been AI-generated.

Disinformation Targeting Macron Identified by Ukrainian Centre

Additionally, the Ukrainian Centre for Countering Disinformation highlighted the emergence of a bot network disseminating doctored newspaper covers that link French President Emmanuel Macron to Epstein. The Centre confirmed that no credible evidence supports claims of Macron’s direct communication with Epstein, nor any involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities.
