Daily Express – United Britain stands firm against thugs

    August 8, 2024

The Daily Express leads on the thousands of anti-racist protesters who took to the streets after fears that more far-right riots would take place this evening. The paper says “A sea of anti-racist protesters across the UK emerged on Wednesday night to retake ‘our streets’ in heartwarming scenes repeated in cities across the country.” The front page reports on Matt Hudson-Smith who narrowly missed out on Gold at the Olympics.

UK riots: 9 towns and cities where thousands showed far-right thugs they’re outnumbered

In a remarkable show of unity, towns and cities across the nation witnessed heartening scenes as throngs of anti-racist demonstrators took to the streets to make a stand against the menace of far-right thuggery.

Accrington, Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield, Birmingham, Oldham, Brighton and London all saw waves of peaceful protesters reclaiming “our streets” in a powerful retort to previous days of extremist violence, with other smaller counter protests also taking place.

Buckingham Palace has revealed that His Majesty King Charles has been receiving daily briefings on the riots plaguing various locations, as authorities anticipated potential widespread turmoil from 100 “planned events” across 41 police jurisdictions. A massive response was prepared, with 6,000 police officers ready to tackle any unrest.

Matthew Hudson-Smith screams expletive as GB denied first men’s 400m gold in 100 years

Team GB’s wait for a gold medal in the men’s 400m goes on, after Matthew Hudson-Smith was edged out of first place on the line.

Hudson-Smith was leading for most of the back half but missed out on gold after a late surge from Quincy Hall.

Team GB last won the men’s 400m 100 years ago, the last time the Olympic Games were held in Paris.

Ultimately, it was less than 0.20 seconds that separated Hudson-Smith from gold, despite the Brit running a personal best on the Stade de France track.

The Team GB runner posted the fifth fastest time in history. However, it was little consequence to Hudson-Smith, who could smell the gold medal with less than 10m to go.

‘Tens of thousands of anti-racism protesters protect UK’ - Paper Talk

    Editorial 08 August 2024.

Almost all of Thursday’s front pages report on the anti-racism protestors taking to England’s streets yesterday – in peaceful demonstrations. There is also coverage of the first far-right thugs that have been sentenced for their roles in the rioting and disorder we have seen over the past week – following the stabbing deaths of three young girls and misinformation about the attacker spreading rapidly online.

Many front pages feature images of Matt Hudson-Smith – who narrowly missed out on Gold at the Olympics. His Olympics 2024 silver dominates the back pages and the UK sports pages.
