    Ex-NHS staff return

Some 20,000 ex-NHS staff return to work to help fight the coronavirus pandemic, prime minister Boris Johnson has said.

In a video the PM posted on Twitter, he thanked the doctors, nurses and other medics who have returned to the NHS as well as the 750,000 members of the public who have volunteered to help during the pandemic.

“One thing I think the coronavirus crisis has already proved is that there really is such a thing as society,” he said.

The prime minister’s words reference a famous quote by former Conservative PM Margret Thatcher, who once said: “there is no such thing as society.”

Thanks to everyone who has been staying at home.

The Prime Minister is currently self-isolating after contracting COVID-19.

The number of UK deaths from COVID-19 has now reached 1,228.

‘Early signs’ UK coronavirus is slowing down in the UK

The spreading of COVID-19 in the UK has shown “early signs” of slowing down since going into lockdown says a leading government adviser.

The government introduced strict measures across the country a week ago.

Prof Neil Ferguson told the BBC, some indicators such as the number of new hospital admissions per day, suggests the spread does “appear to be slowing down a little bit.”

Speaking to BBC’s Today programme he said the numbers hadn’t “plateaued” yet and they were still rising each day, “but the rate of that increase has slowed.”

However, the pattern has not reflected in the number of deaths – but these usually lagged a long way behind.
