UK weather: Today set to be hottest day of the year so far

    • Thursday is set to be the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures climbing to at least 29C.
    • The Met Office has predicted that the UK could face the warmest start to May on record, following an unseasonably warm end to April.
    • Met Office maps show that parts of the south could reach 29C today – even 30C.
    • The Midlands and the northeast could see temperatures climb to 27C, while in Wales it will be as warm as 25C.
    • Manchester and Newcastle could see the thermometer climb to 25C or 26C, while parts of Scotland will reach 22C.
    • The Met Office said temperatures reached 26.7C in Wisley, Surrey on Wednesday – making it the warmest day of the year so far. But that could replaced by today’s blistering temperatures.
    • However, while the UK is experiencing a batch of warm and sunny days, the Met Office has ruled out a heatwave this week, with Silverstone saying it looks “unlikely”.
    • A heatwave is defined as three consecutive days of temperatures exceeding the “heatwave threshold”, which varies across the country. The threshold is 25C for most of the UK, rising to 28C in London.
