Sunday papers – PM plans ‘mass clearout’ & Volcano eruption

The Sunday papers report heavily on the continued fallout from the latest scandal facing the UK government – two more Downing Street parties that took place during Covid restrictions.

A satellite image of an underwater volcano erupting in the Pacific yesterday dominates the front pages – the eruption has seen the whole of the US west coast and Japan warned about potential tsunamis.

The Sunday Times – Johnson prepares mass clearout to save own skin

The Sunday Times has news of a “mass clearout” planned by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to “save his own skin”. The paper says the PM is refusing to take responsibility for the crisis engulfing Downing Street.

Meanwhile, the main image on the front page is of the moment the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano in the South Pacific erupted on Saturday, leading to warnings from the US and Japan of tsunami waves.

The Observer – Tories will oust PM if he tries to dodge ‘partygate’ blame’

The front page of the Observer reports Tory MPs are ready to oust Boris Johnson if he tries to dodge responsibility for rule-breaking parties at No 10. The paper says it is a furious voter reaction that persuaded Tory MPs to act against the PM if Sue Gray’s investigation is critical of him or his No 10 operation.

The paper also carries a story on police fears that anti-vaxxers will adopt violent tactics as the paper says police and counter-terrorism officials believe the UK’s anti-vax movement is heading towards a formation of US-style militias.

The Sunday Telegraph – Carrie Johnson broke Covid rules

The Sunday Telegraph leads with Carrie Johnson and a friend. The paper alleges the PM’s wife broke Covid social distancing rules days after the public was told it was “critical” to follow the guidance. The paper says the image was taken in September 2020 during a friend’s engagement party at a private members’ club in the West End. A spokesman for Mrs Johnson told the paper she “regrets the momentary lapse in judgement in briefly hugging her friend for a photograph.”

According to the Daily Express, a senior government source told the paper that all Covid restrictions in England will be ditched in 10 days. The paper asks if the move will “save” the prime minister – who is facing serious questioning after the reveal of more Downing Street parties during Covid restrictions.
