‘Shots were fired at a vehicle arriving at the emergency department with individuals believed to have been injured in an earlier off-site shooting,’ said a University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital spokesperson, according to CNN.
‘The shooter immediately fled the scene.’
Witnesses said that multiple shots rang like ‘iron pipes hitting’.
Gunshots struck a hospital window as well as a medical vehicle.
At least five people were shot at the nightclub on the 900 block of Fifth Avenue North, said Birmingham police Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Two of the victims, a 24-year-old woman from Center Point and a 33-year-old woman from Birmingham, were pronounced dead at the medial facility, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. Their names were not immediately released.
The hospital was placed on lockdown.
Meanwhile, the club was holding a Labor Day Rehab Sunday event on Sunday, its Instagram page stated. The club and the hospital, which is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Alabama, are only about a five-minute drive apart.
Family members of one of the female victims appeared distraught when informed of her death around 5.30am, according to AL.com.
The women were the 90th and 91st homicide victims in Birmingham so far this year. There have 127 homicides in Jefferson County.
No arrests were immediately made, according to WSFA.
