HasanAbi has started a charity fundraiser to aid Gaza civilians through medical assistance, and it’s almost reached a million dollars.

For a long time now, HasanAbi has been a political streamer on Twitch, who often has a viewer count north of 20,000. As such, he started a charity fund viewers can donate into for Palestinian civilians affected in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

People have flocked to his stream to donate, mostly $10 (£8) at a time, all of which quickly started adding up.

The charity fund began on Saturday with a goal of $250,000 (£205,000) and reached $828,000 (£680,000) on Monday, and it’s still ongoing.

People had donated $50,000 (£41,000) after 10 minutes of the fundraiser being live, and $100,000 (£82,000) after 20 minutes. The goal HasanAbi had set of $250,000 was reached after an hour and 20 minutes, when he then set a new goal of $500,000 (£410,000).

As the money has poured in, the American streamer has had to increase the goal amount several times. The latest is $1 million (£820,000) which looks likely to be reached soon, as the fund has currently accumulated $828,000.

During Monday’s stream HasanAbi also said he would match donations up to $50,000 himself, which means if the stream receives $50,000 in donations he’ll match it. With such momentum, that amount was reached in no time.

Hamas militants crossed the border into Israel earlier in the month, killing over a thousand civilians and taking hundreds hostage. The conflict between Israel and Palestine stretches back decades but this is by far the most violent incident in recent years, even before the full nature of Israel’s military response is known.

Charity streams are not a new thing on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, with many streamers having raised similar amounts of money in the past. Fortnite streamer Dr. Lupo once raised $892,000 (£732,000) for a children’s hospital and more recently the Sidemen football match for charity raised £2.4 million.

Though it’s unknown how long HasanAbi will continue his charity fundraising, it looks like it’ll pass $1 million pretty soon.
