Chef Brian Turner revealed that he is still ‘suffering’ from his stroke but insists he is on the mend.

Earlier in the year, the 77-year-old appeared on James Martin’s ITV programme Saturday Morning and shared his serious condition with viewers watching at home.

‘Unfortunately I had a stroke in June last year, and the people at the London hospital were fantastic and helpful,’ the TV personality and writer said, before explaining that his speech might be affected as a result.

‘So excuse me if I make a stammer occasionally,’ he said.

During Saturday’s [June 3] recent instalment Brian explained: ‘I’m still suffering a little bit to problems related with stroke, but launched a national campaign called FAST because it’s a medical emergency.

‘If see somebody having a stroke, please dial 999 as fast as possible.’

James later reminded Brian of the response he wanted to give to the public.

‘I just really wanted to say thank you to everyone who has given support,’ Brian added.

‘My family, friends and everyone who cared enough to say “get well soon.”

    ‘I’m getting better.’

What are the symptoms of a stroke?

The NHS outlines that the symptoms of a stroke can be remembered by using the acronym FAST, which stands for Face, Arms, Speech and Time.

When an individual suffers a stroke, they may not be able to smile, their face may have dropped to one side or their mouth or eye may have dropped.

They may not be able to lift both of their arms and keep them up, as one of their arms could be feeling weak or numb.

They may exhibit slurred or unclear speech, or be unable to talk at all and have difficulty understanding if someone else is speaking to them.

People are urged to call 999 if any of these symptoms are spotted.

The charity Stroke Association offers a helpline for anyone who has suffered or been affected by stroke, or if you want further information. You can call the helpline on 0303 3033 100 or email [email protected].

Several people watching the programme expressed their support for Brian, with one tweeting: ‘Lovely to see Brian again @sat_jamesmartin you’re a fine example of a human being and your support for @BrianTurnerChef and #stroke symptoms is appreciated.

‘Feel quite sad watching Brian Turner on James Martin’s Saturday Morning what a legend though! #saturdaymorning,’ another added.

A third person tweeted: ‘Looking so much better than last time and giving hope to survivors of stroke. Great to see him supporting the @TheStrokeAssoc.’

Saturday Morning returns next Saturday on ITV.
