LA chaos as Trump sends in National Guard – Spending Review pleas – NHS asks for more blood donations | The newspapers summarised

Monday’s newspaper headlines are dominated by a few stories: Government policy, in particular, the upcoming Spending Review, which is set to be released on Wednesday and the clashes between protests and authorities in the USA as Trump sends in National Guard.

A handful of front pages reports on the NHS‘s call for more blood donations, whilst the back pages report on football transfer gossip ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, Portugal winning the Nations League and Spain’s Alcaraz winning the French Open.

LA chaos as Trump sends in National Guard

The Guardian, The Times and the FT are amongst the UK front pages to lead with the story.

    • The Guardian calls Trump’s action a “dramatic escalation” in his attempt to quell the LA protests against sweeping immigration raids in the US. The paper reports that Trump has been accused of “hoping for chaos.”
    • The Times leads with an image of the heavily armed US National Guard soldiers in Los Angeles. The paper says Trump sent in 2,000 guards and says the “radical left protesters” who are “often paid troublemakers” will “not be tolerated.”
    • The FT says Trump’s “LA face-off” as it says law enforcement officers used “rubber bullets” and “flash-bad grenades” to fend off protesters.
    • The i calls Trump’s “crackdown” on the protests as “hypocrisy” and says the president sending in the National Guard is “dangerous.”

Spending Review to be released on Wednesday

The Times, the i and the Telegraph are among the papers leading with government policy and the upcoming Spending Review.  The papers are fighting for their own reader base, with the right-wing broadsheets wanting more funding for police and the right-wing tabloids asking for more money for pensioners.

    • The Times says that Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to “boost” police budgets before this week’s spending review.
    • The Telegraph warns the chancellor that the police service is “broken” – saying morale has been left “crushed” by funding cuts.
    • The Daily Express says “angry campaigners” are demanding Reeves does not “betray pensioners again” after Labour’s winter fuel payment U-turn.

    NHS asks for blood donations

Metro and the Daily Mirror are amongst those leading with the NHS’s calls for more blood donations as supplies run low.

    • Metro says the “NHS is out for your blood!” saying the health service needs around “200,000 more” blood donors to “urgently” increase stocks.
    • The Daily Mirror echoes the “blood donor red alert” in its coverage of the “worst-ever crisis” facing the NHS as supplies are at a “critical low.”
