Trump arrives in Florida ahead of court appearance
Former US president Donald Trump has arrived in Miami, Florida, where he will be attending court on Tuesday to face charges related to mishandling national security documents.
The charges against Trump involve the illegal retention of classified documents including sensitive data about nuclear secrets. This marks the second time Trump has been indicted for a criminal offence.
Despite the legal challenges, the former president continues to campaign for a potential return to the White House in 2024. Trump claims the charges against him amount to nothing more than “election interference” by the FBI.
Miami’s Mayor Francis Suarez told reports the city was preparing for Trump’s appearance and could see crowds of up to 50,000 people. Trump will appear in court alongside a close aide, Walt Nauta, who was charged by the same grand jury in Florida. Both men are set to make their initial appearances at 15:00 local time.
There will be no photos or video access during the hearing – only a court sketch artist will be present.
The former president is expected to return to Bedminster, New Jersey to speak to the media. He denies all wrongdoing.
