Trent Alexander-Arnold described the action as ‘mental’ after scoring an 88th minute winner in Liverpool’s 4-3 victory over Fulham at Anfield on Sunday.
It was a thrilling contest which swung this way and that, dramatically ending up in the favour of the home side.
A brilliant Alexander-Arnold free-kick went in off Bernd Leno to open the scoring for Liverpool before Harry Wilson equalised. An Alexis Mac Allister screamer put the Reds back ahead but Kenny Tete again levelled just before half-time.
Fulham looked like they had grabbed an unlikely win when Bobby De Cordova-Reid netted 80 minutes in, but Wataru Endo scored his first Premier League goal with three minutes left on the clock and Alexander-Arnold grabbed the winner just seconds later.
The 25-year-old reacted as you might expect after the game, struggling to fit in all the emotions that he experienced over the contest.
‘It’s mental, to be honest,’ Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports. ‘A game of massive ups and downs. Leading, then getting clawed back twice, then obviously losing with about five minutes to go, getting the equaliser and then getting the winner.
‘It’s an unbelievable game, full of emotion. Just very, very happy to get the win and be able to get over the line.’
Jurgen Klopp was thrilled with the win and could scarcely believe the quality of the goals, even if Alexander-Arnold’s first was eventually dubbed an own goal.
‘I never saw a game with so many worldies,’ said the German. ‘Macca’s been doing it in training. Trent’s free-kick was unbelievable. Wataru was so important. He was really good. Then Trent makes it a brace. I didn’t actually see it go in.’
Fulham boss Marco Silva was frustrated after the defeat, pleased with how his team played but returning to west London with nothing to show for it.
‘We deserved much more from the game,’ he said. ‘To come to Anfield and play the way we did. The way they scored the goals were first-class but they didn’t create many.’
