Travel: Places you can go if you’re not fully vaccinated

Places you can go if you’re not fully vaccinated – Green list countries, amber list and rules

Holiday options are opening up as the government will no longer advise travelling to amber list countries – such as France, Spain and Greece.

Meanwhile, Brits who have been double jabbed will no longer need to self-isolate on their return from amber list countries from July 19, and a number of countries are opening up to tourists who have had both vaccinations against Covid-19.

So what about those who haven’t yet been vaccinated or those who have only had their first jab?

There are still plenty of holiday options if you want to go abroad – including some quarantine-free trips to green list countries.

These are some of the options for those wanting to travel abroad, regardless of your vaccination status.

    Green list countries

Green list countries are the best option for those who are not fully jabbed and don’t want to quarantine either side of the holiday. But you will be required to take a pre-departure test and a PCR test on day two of being back in the UK.

Balearic Islands: The Balearics are on the green list, and have reopened to Brits with no need to quarantine upon arrival. However, if you are not fully vaccinated, you will need to show proof of a negative ‘gold standard’ PCR test result taken within 48 hours of travel.

Gibraltar: You can visit Gibraltar if you’ve been in one of its green list countries for the 10 days before travel (this includes the UK). However, you will need to take a pre-flight Covid lateral flow test no more than 48 hours before your flight.

Madeira: Madeira is welcoming unvaccinated Brits who have a negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours of their flight, and who complete an online form before travelling. Never been to the Portuguese archipelago? We’ve got a guide to Madeira’s best things to see and do for a dose of inspiration.

    Amber list countries

If you’re not double jabbed you’ll need to self-isolate at home for 10 days once you’ve arrived back in the UK and take two PCR tests. The government has however lifted its advice against travel to a number of amber list countries – so you can go but you’ll have to quarantine when you’re back.

Bulgaria: Unvaccinated Brits can visit Bulgaria but will need to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of entry into the country. You can opt for an antigen test instead, but then this must be taken within 48 hours of entry. Bulgaria is also open to those who can prove they recovered from Covid – you’ll need a document showing a positive result that must be dated between 15-180 days prior to arrival.

Croatia: Croatia has said it will welcome Brits back as soon as the UK lifts its restrictions. You’ll need to show proof of a negative PCR test result, a negative antigen test or confirmation of recovery from Covid-19 within 180 days, if you aren’t fully vaccinated. You’ll also need to show confirmation of booked accommodation and fill out an online form before travelling.

Cyprus: You’ll need to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure. You’ll also be asked to undergo a second test when you arrive at the airport, and stay in self-isolation until you get the result (this usually takes around three hours).

Greece: Any unvaccinated Brits aged 12 or over who want to visit Greece will need to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before arrival, or proof of a negative rapid antigen test result taken within 48 hours. Regardless of vaccination status, all travellers need to fill in a Passenger Locator Form.

Spain: Spain changed its rules earlier this month meaning that unvaccinated Brits now need to show proof of a negative’ gold standard’ PCR test result taken within 48 hours of arrival. Mainland Spain and the Canaries remain on the amber list, but it’s worth noting the Balearics have been added to the green list which doesn’t require you to quarantine when back in the UK.
