Tories U-turn on Owen Paterson vote after fury at lobbying scandal
The Metro says The government has been forced into an embarrassing climbdown over its attempt to scrap the Commons sleaze watchdog.
Boris Johnson has been accused of cronyism after Tories voted to stop the suspension of Owen Paterson.
The North Shropshire MP looked certain to be suspended from the Commons after being found guilty of an ‘egregious’ case of paid lobbying but the government derailed the process.
Instead of confirming the suspension, the prime minister ordered his MPs to support an amendment which put Mr Paterson’s case on ice and began the process of replacing the current standards arrangements.
