Britain will get its first British-Asian PM or its third Tory female leader after Penny Mordaunt was booted out of the leadership race by just eight votes.

Outgoing PM Boris Johnson declared that either Mr Sunak or Ms Truss would “wipe the floor” with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

It is now up to the 160,000 Conservative Party members to choose who it will be over the next seven weeks.
