The Sunday Papers – ‘Tories at war’ & ‘Charles aid knighthood scam’

The Sunday Papers report on the unrest within the Conservative party over plans to raise national insurance. The PM says the move is vital for the NHS but senior party members have labelled the move ‘idiotic’.

Also dominating the front pages is the news Prince Charles’ ‘most trusted’ aide has stepped down following an investigation into whether he fixed a knighthood for a Saudi tycoon who donated £1.5m to The Princes’ Trust.

‘Tories at war over idiotic tax increase’

The Sunday Telegraph says Boris Johnson is facing unrest within his party over plans to raise national insurance – a move labelled ‘idiotic’ by senior party members. The paper says the PM is set to insist the raise is vital for the NHS. The PM will try to justify the increase as necessary to clear the backlog of patients on hospital waiting lists, according to the paper.

    ‘Tories MPs fear voter revolt’

The Sunday Express also reports on the unrest within the Conservative party, saying the PM is facing pressure from MPs over tax rises, pensions, social care, illegal immigration and green policies. The Tories risk losing their Red Wall gains if the government increases taxes and ditches the triple lock protection on the state pension, Tory MPs who hold seats in the area have warned.

‘Charles aides fixed CBE for Saudi tycoon who gave £1.5m’

The Sunday Times reports on an aide to Prince Charles, who resigned on Saturday following allegations he had arranged an honour for a Saudi tycoon who donated more than £1.5m to royal charities. Micheal Fawcett has stood down temporarily as chief executive of The Prince’s Foundation, the paper continues, alleging that Mahgouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz paid thousands of pounds to people with links to Prince Charles who told the Saudi businessman that they could secure an honour. He was appointed a CBE in 2016 and has denied any wrongdoing. A spokesman for The Prince’s Foundation told the paper the organisation is investigating the allegations.

‘Charles aide told Saudi donor: We’ll help you get knighthood’

The Mail on Sunday reports on the investigation into Prince Charles’ aide. The paper says that Mr Fawcett had said in a letter that the charity would be “happy and willing” to use its influence to help the Saudi tycoon. The Mail on Sunday describes Mr Fawcett as “arguably the prince’s most trusted aide.”

‘Teens face 5-hour trip for vaccine’

The Sunday Mirror reports teenagers are facing five-hour trips to get the coronavirus vaccine.  The paper says many towns do not have the “grab a jab” walk-in centres, where 16 and 17-year-olds are told to go, with the alternatives sometimes as far as 70 miles away. Labour MP Justin Madders has said it is “ridiculous” to expect those under the age of 18 to travel such distances.
