‘Too many bad eggs’ – Alan Shearer delivers damming verdict of Manchester United after Newcastle defeat

Alan Shearer has warned there are ‘too many bad eggs’ in the current Manchester United squad following their dismal showing against Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe’s side sealed a 1-0 win over the visitors at St James’ Park but the narrow scoreline didn’t do Newcastle much justice having dominated the entire game.

Anthony Gordon’s second-half effort was the only goal of the game but the hosts created countless chances with Kieran Trippier and Tino Livramento a constant threat coming down the flanks.

Trippier alone created six chances on the night, including setting up the winner, with Diogo Dalot, starting at left-back, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka overrun by the Newcastle duo.

The full-backs weren’t given any favours by the men in front of them however with former Newcastle star Shearer insisting Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho ‘didn’t look interested’ in helping their defenders out.

‘They [Newcastle] absolutely battered Man United in wide areas, Trippier and Livramento were sensational against Wan-Bissaka and Dalot but in their defence they got absolutely no help whatsoever from Garnacho and Rashford,’ Shearer told Match of the Day.

‘Rashford is nowhere near him [Livramento], it is too easy, there is not enough effort from him at all there,’ Shearer added after reviewing clips of the Newcastle full-back easily skipping around his man.

‘He didn’t look at it all today, didn’t look interested. Newcastle are in behind United’s back four again, getting balls into the box and it happened so many times not just on the left but also on the right.’

During one second-half attack, Rashford stopped running completely after being beaten by Livramento. Shearer said: ‘It wasn’t good enough from Marcus, not when that is your job to try and stop him. Livramento did it all game.’

Garnacho offered little support to his full-back (Picture: Getty)

He continued: ‘It was simple runs in behind, he [Dalot] is getting no help from Garnacho, he is not tracking back at all. Newcastle created so many chances.’

With former United stars Paul Scholes and Steve Bruce among those questioning the application and efforts of certain members of the current squad, Shearer concluded there is a serious attitude problem within the group.

‘For me, there are too many bad eggs in that Man United team. Too many bad attitudes,’ he said.

‘It’s alright when things are going well for you, you can get your feet on the ball, you can play, pick your passes when things are nice and rosy.

‘But when it’s not going for you, you’re a bit tired, you’ve been away at a European game and you have got to roll your sleeves up, there are not enough characters in that team.’
