Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Monday’s front pages report on several stories including the news of Sarah, the Duchess of York’s cancer diagnosis. She has had surgery and is recovering at Windsor. The unrest in Russia dominates many of the papers, as well as Sir Elton John’s Glastonurry performance – his last ever UK gig, as he prepares to retire from touring.
Sarah Ferguson’s breast cancer
Most papers report on the Duchess of York, with many papers leaving space on their front pages for it. The Daily Express says the operation was a success and she was discharged over the weekend. The Sun leads with a quote from a friend of Sarah Ferguson who praised the staff at King Edward VII’s Hospital in Marylebone, London. The Daily Mirror says the Duchess is recovering back home in Windsor, Berkshire, with family including ex-husband Prince Andrew.
Prince William is the lead for the Daily Telegraph, as the prince has vowed to end homelessness in his lifetime. He is set to launch a project which he has been working on for two years. The prince opened up about being inspired by his late mother Princess Diana – who was also a patron for Centrepoint.
Unrest in Russia
The Financial Times says the weekend’s events have “laid bare the cracks” in Putin’s authority, while The Independent notes the silence from the Kremlin since the mutiny.
The Daily Mail says Putin could “lash out” and speculates Russia’s leader could go for a “Stalin-style” purge of his enemies. The Times reports Foreign Office diplomats have been told to prepare for the fall of Putin and more unrest in Russia. The Metro says there are “treasons to be cheerful” as Ukraine makes progress on the battlefield in the wake of the mutiny.
Sir Elton bids farewell
Several of the papers report on Glastonbury. The Daily Star reports on Sir Elton’s performance, noting it’s his last UK performance ever. “Rock it man’s farewell,” says the paper.
