Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Tuesday’s front pages still heavily feature the coronation but there is a little more variety than the weekend’s coverage. Many of the papers feature one of the official portraits released by Buckingham Palace.
Coronation coverage
The newly crowned King’s message of thanks after the Coronation weekend, accompanied by his first official photograph, dominates the front pages of The Times and other papers. The Sun’s headline reads “Our Noble King”.
BoJo squared up to Charles
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reports on a “bust up” between Boris Johnson and the then Prince of Wales last summer, with the former Downing Street communications director claiming Mr Johnson “squared up” to Charles over his criticism of the government’s plans to deport Channel migrants to Rwanda.
The Daily Telegraph focuses on Rishi Sunak’s relaunch, highlighting a new scheme that allows people to obtain prescriptions for common conditions from pharmacies in England without seeing a doctor. The paper comments that whilst innovations in the system are welcome, whether they are adequate to address the issue of failings in the system of GP appointments remains to be seen. The Guardian notes that whilst the blueprint has been welcomed by health leaders, experts warn that not all pharmacies will be able to offer all the new services.
£1.4bn in dividends
The Financial Times leads on a report that privatised water and sewage companies in the UK paid out £1.4bn in dividends last year, despite criticism over sewage outflows and rising household bills.
Finally, The Daily Mirror highlights research from consumer group Which?, which reveals that two million homes missed at least one bill last month, leading the paper to conclude that Britain is a nation falling deeper into debt and hardship.
