Today’s news summary – Paper Talk

Several of Thursday’s front pages lead with images of Boris Johnson with President Zelensky, after the PM visited Kyiv to mark Ukraine’s independence day.

Boris Johnson with President Zelensky in Kyiv visit

The Daily Telegraph and the Times highlight the prime minister’s comments that Brits are paying for Russia’s invasion through high energy prices while the Ukrainians are paying in blood.

The Telegraph adds that the economic situation could be a test of the West’s determination to stand up for democracy.

The Guardian leads with a warning that a plan has been draw up to disconnect the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant from the Ukrainian power grid – which risks “catastrophic failure.”

The paper reports the Russians are shelling lines linking the plant to the grid with the aim to cause an emergency.

The Sun says the UK and EU should stop giving tourists visas to Russians, thought in their editorial they note it would be unfair on the Russians who oppose the war, but many of those people have already fled Russia.

    Cost of living crisis

The Daily Mirror’s front page headline says: “Freeze Our Bills Now!”. The paper says plunging millions more households into fuel poverty could have been avoided if there was a functioning government.

The Times reports that NHS bosses are alarmed over Liz Truss’s plans to divert £10bn a year from the ehealth service to social care if she wins the election.

“Labour’s money troubles deepen,” says the i – which reports Keir Stamer has forced shadow cabinet members to stop fund-raising for themselves and, instead, is trying to centralise donations.
